PremiumRollerball, fountain pen or ballpoint: how each writes
Engraved fountain pens and rollerballs may look similar when capped, but they write differently. A ballpoint uses thick ink that dries at once and works on almost any paper. A rollerball uses liquid or gel water-based ink: it glides with hardly any pressure and gives a richer line, closer to a fountain pen. A fountain pen writes with a nib that gradually adapts to the writer’s hand, which is why it is the most personal writing instrument.
That difference matters when you are choosing a gift. A rollerball suits almost anyone from day one. A fountain pen delights someone who already writes with one or has missed using one, and may end up in a drawer for someone who does not. If you are unsure between the two, a rollerball is the safer choice; and if you need something simpler for a larger group, see our personalised pens.
What to choose for each person
| Instrument | How it writes | Maintenance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rollerball | Smooth, rich line with little pressure | Rollerball refill; best kept capped so it does not dry out | Someone who writes by hand a lot and signs often |
| Fountain pen | Line varies with the hand; the nib adapts with use | Ink cartridges and occasional cleaning | Writing enthusiasts and recognition gifts |
| Premium ballpoint pen | Dries instantly and does not smudge | Ballpoint refill | Someone who signs standing up or is left-handed |
| Writing set in a gift box | Two instruments for different uses | The maintenance of each instrument | Anniversaries, retirements and year-end gifts |
Nib, ink and paper: what to check
- Nib width. F (fine) gives precise handwriting and works well in diaries and on thin paper; M (medium) gives a fuller line and is common for signing. The width appears in the model name or product details.
- Ink colour. Blue or black, depending on the model. On documents that are scanned or photocopied, black is easier to read.
- Paper. Rollerballs and fountain pens put down more ink than a ballpoint, and on thin paper they may bleed through. Pair them with a personalised notebook in a good paper weight.
- Left-handed users. Liquid ink takes a few seconds to dry, and a hand moving across the writing can smudge it. If you do not know, a premium ballpoint avoids the problem.
- Presentation. This varies by model: check the product details to see whether a gift box is included.
How a fountain pen or rollerball is branded
The price on each product page includes a 1-colour logo in the standard branding area. On branded writing instruments, your logo sits alongside the manufacturer’s mark, which is usually on the clip or cap, so yours goes on the barrel.
| Technique | Result | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Laser engraving | Single-tone: the colour of the metal revealed beneath the lacquer | Lacquered and metal barrels; the most understated finish |
| Pad printing | One or more solid colours | When the logo needs to appear in its corporate colour |
| UV digital printing | Full colour, with gradients | Complex logos on smooth, light-coloured barrels |
Depending on the model, the configurator may also offer circular screen printing or a resin dome.
Common mistakes when giving logo fountain pens and rollerballs
- Using a large logo or several colours. On a premium writing instrument, a small single-tone engraving is what makes it usable in front of other people.
- Covering the manufacturer’s mark with your own: it reduces the value of the gift. Your logo goes on the barrel and theirs stays where it is.
- Giving fountain pens to a whole workforce. They suit specific people; for larger teams, an engraved metal pen usually works better.
- Thinking only about the first use. A fountain pen or rollerball can last for years if the recipient knows which refill or cartridge to buy: mention it on the gift card.
- Deciding without having held it in your hand. For a gift at this level, a sample lets you check the weight, the writing line and the engraving before you order.
When to give them and how to order
These are gifts for a specific moment: a promotion, the signing of an important contract, a company anniversary, a retirement or year-end gifts for the clients who matter most. In those cases, each instrument is given individually, and the presentation matters as much as the object itself.
Each model can be ordered from 10 units per reference, with a minimum order of €100.00 per quote, excluding VAT and delivery. We send you a free mock-up with your logo shown at real scale, and you pay when you approve it. Production usually takes two or three weeks, depending on the technique and quantity, and shipping is tracked to one address or several sites across the European Union.
Why it works
The cheapest product per person reached.
A pen costs pennies and is used by many more people than those who receive it: it gets lent, forgotten and travels. For a trade show or a mass mailing, it's still unbeatable, as long as it writes well.
- Ink refill with declared autonomy
- Metal clip on mid-range ones
- Certified recycled plastic in almost the entire catalogue
Rollerballs and Fountain Pens: the entire catalogue is branded in Europe, with delivery within the timeframe we agree with you.
The detail
Pad printing is the technique for curves.
On a round body, it's the only one that keeps the logo straight. Flat screen printing gets distorted.
